GTA 6 Map vs GTA 5 Map: How Much Bigger Is It?
Updated 19 September 2026. Rockstar’s GTA 6 map size comparison is about twice GTA 5’s map and three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, according to Rob Nelson’s August 2026 preview interviews. Rockstar has not published an official area in square miles or kilometres for either GTA game. The ratios answer the scale question, while this guide separates city boundaries, wider regions, unofficial measurements and the confirmed places across Leonida.
Quick Info
- About twice GTA 5’s map, per Rob Nelson in August 2026.
- About three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area.
- Vice City is about twice Los Santos. Vice City plus surrounding suburbs was described as about eleven times Los Santos plus its surroundings.
- The setting is Vice City in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional Miami and Florida.
- No official square-mile or square-kilometre area has been published for GTA 6.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
The direct answer is about twice GTA 5 and three times RDR2’s playable area. Nelson gave the three-times-RDR2 comparison in the New York Times preview published on 27 August 2026. The twice-GTA-5 comparison was reported by TGG following his August 2026 visit to Rockstar North. These are interview comparisons, not measurements made by DamnModz.
The familiar estimate of roughly 29 square miles for RDR2 can be traced to a player’s October 2018 image-area calculation, rather than an official Rockstar measurement. Multiplying that estimate by three would give about 87 square miles, but that is an illustration of arithmetic, not a GTA 6 area claim. It inherits the original estimate’s assumptions about scale and boundaries, while the interview ratios are themselves approximate.
This is why the map-size answer is now much cleaner than it was earlier in 2026. The ratio itself is no longer a fan reconstruction. The uncertainty sits in the absolute area, the playable boundary, and how Rockstar defines the comparison between city, suburbs, water and wilderness.
The Map Comparison
| Game | Setting | Confirmed relative size | Commonly cited area | Confirmed regions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | Los Santos and Blaine County | Baseline for the GTA 6 comparison | About 49 square miles of play area, reported as an estimate by Wired on 3 October 2013, not confirmed by Rockstar | Los Santos, Blaine County |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | American frontier states and regions | GTA 6 described as about 3x its playable area | About 29 square miles, a 2018 player calculation later widely repeated, not a Rockstar measurement | Multiple named states and territories |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Vice City and Leonida | About 2x GTA 5 and 3x RDR2 playable area | No official area | Vice City, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga National Park |
In TGG’s August 2026 account of his Rockstar North visit, Nelson also separated the city comparison from the wider metro comparison. Vice City was described as about twice Los Santos, while Vice City plus its surrounding suburbs was described as about eleven times Los Santos plus its surroundings. Those statements use different boundaries, so the eleven-times figure should not be read as an eleven-times comparison for the full game map.
For the order and release context of these games, our GTA release-date timeline covers the series. The GTA 5 comparison is the most intuitive because both games use a dense coastal city with a wider state or county around it. Even there, “twice the size” does not tell you how the extra space is distributed. It could be more city blocks, more rural roads, more coastline, more interiors, or a combination. Rockstar’s location list suggests the extra scale is spread across very different environments rather than simply doubling Vice City outward.
Where Is GTA 6 Set?
GTA 6 is set in Vice City, USA, in the state of Leonida. Vice City is Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami. Leonida is its fictional Florida, extending the setting far beyond the city itself.
Rockstar’s current public material names Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park. The names establish a mix of dense urban space, coastal islands, industrial areas, wetlands and inland terrain without revealing the full in-game boundary.
Vice City is the anchor, but Leonida is the more important scale term. A city-only comparison misses the Keys, wetlands, smaller settlements and northern parkland that expand the playable state. That is why the full-map ratio and the Vice City versus Los Santos ratio should be kept separate.
Confirmed Leonida Regions
- Vice City: the main urban center, based on Miami.
- Leonida Keys: the island chain south of the mainland setting.
- Port Gellhorn: a separate coastal city or town area within Leonida.
- Ambrosia: a named inland community.
- Grassrivers: Leonida’s wetland region.
- Mount Kalaga National Park: a northern parkland area that adds terrain beyond the South Florida-inspired core.
These names matter more than speculative coastlines because Rockstar has actually published them. They prove the playable state is built around multiple distinct regions without requiring a fan reconstruction of the final map.

What Is Still an Estimate
Rockstar has not published GTA 6’s area in square miles or square kilometres. The land-versus-water split is unknown, the final playable boundary has not been published, and the older 2.7x fan ratio has no standing against the August statements from Rockstar’s development head.
A larger map also does not automatically mean a world that feels larger minute to minute. Rockstar has discussed hundreds of accessible interiors and more than 600,000 animations during the 2026 preview cycle. Density, traffic, interiors, traversal speed and mission routing can change how scale feels even when raw area increases. Our GTA 6 story-length guide explains why a developer playthrough that includes optional content cannot be translated into a fixed campaign duration.
Water matters too. Two maps with the same total rectangular footprint can offer very different playable land areas if one contains more ocean, bays or inaccessible edges. Until Rockstar publishes the in-game map or a measured area, ratio statements are the strongest defensible comparison.
The same caution applies to “full map” screenshots circulating online. Rockstar has shown wide aerial views and named locations, but it has not published the complete in-game map with boundaries and scale. This article therefore does not use fan-map borders, unofficial coastlines or reconstructed overlays to fill that gap.
