Efficient route

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy Guide and Platinum Roadmap

Follow these phases in order to protect the missable work and keep the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Platinum cleanup efficient.

1

Phase 0: What this platinum actually requires

There are no Metal Gear Online trophies, so the 2012 MGO shutdown did not affect the platinum at all.

The real requirement is all 40 emblems, because the Snake Eater iPod track is only awarded at 40 and Sounds of the Battlefield needs every track.

Five emblems each require their own dedicated playthrough, which is why the realistic total is at least eight runs.

If you are playing the PS5 Master Collection version, confirm the list first, since reporting says it is mostly the same as PS3.

2

Phase 1: Liquid Snake, and play badly

Start on Liquid Snake, the easiest difficulty, and target the Chicken emblem which needs 35 hours of total play time.

Kill almost every enemy, get spotted constantly and die more than 50 times. This earns a large batch of emblems in one run.

Use the leftover clock deliberately. Leave Snake in a barrel or box, against a wall or prone to accumulate the time-related emblems.

Leaving the console running overnight or while out is the intended way to reach 35 hours efficiently.

Pick up story trophies, collectibles and weapons as you go.

3

Phase 2: Centipede and the preparation run

Do a run for the Centipede emblem with 0 kills and 0 alerts, which awards the Bandana and Stealth Camo.

Those two items make every subsequent run considerably easier, so this run pays for itself.

Stock up on chaff grenades using the Act 1 Frog Trooper fight, standing beside Akiba with chaff equipped so he throws you more.

Obtain the Solar Gun and as many other weapons as you can.

Take the Beauty and Beast dolls here if you want the Solar Gun unlocks, remembering the first phase of each fight does not count as a kill.

4

Phase 3: The Big Boss emblem

This is the wall, and it is what separates most players from the platinum.

Your ammo is capped for this run, guns at 50 bullets and Smoke, Chaff and Stun grenades at 10 each, so preparation matters more than stockpiling.

Earning Big Boss also unlocks at least 10 further emblems at once, which is why it sits in the middle of the plan rather than at the end.

This is the run buyers most often want handled. One soft mention of DamnModz fits here, then back to strategy.

5

Phase 4: Little Gray, Boss Extreme and the last emblems

Little Gray needs all 69 weapons, and the final four only unlock after Big Boss, so it cannot have fired on that run.

Do a dedicated weapons run now to complete the set.

Complete Boss Extreme if you have not, and brace for the Act 3 motorcycle chase which players single out as the worst part.

Combine Assassin and Tarantula in one run, since their requirements are similar.

Once all 40 emblems are held you receive the Snake Eater iPod track, and Sounds of the Battlefield closes out the platinum.

Guide notes

The MGO Shutdown Did Not Kill This Platinum

First section after the Quick Info box. It did not. There are no Metal Gear Online trophies on the list at all, and every one of the 34 trophies is single player, tied to emblems and story progress.

Guide notes

It Is Coming to PS5

Master Collection Vol. 2 brings MGS4 to PS5, and reporting from August 2026 says the trophy list is mostly the same as the PS3 version, which means the Big Boss emblem has to be earned all over again. Verify the list, the release timing and whether it stacks with the PS3 platinum before publishing specifics. This changes the page from an archive guide into one serving people about to attempt it, so build it for both audiences.

Guide notes

The Platinum Needs All 40 Emblems

This is what makes it brutal, and the trophy list disguises it. The final trophy, Sounds of the Battlefield, requires every iPod track, and one of those tracks, Snake Eater, is only awarded once you hold all 40 emblems. So the emblem hunt is not optional flavour, it is the platinum. Five of those emblems each require their own dedicated playthrough, which is why the realistic figure is at least eight runs.

Guide notes

Play Badly on Purpose First

The most efficient thing on this list. Start on Liquid Snake, the easiest difficulty, and aim for the Chicken emblem, which requires 35 hours of total play time among other things. Kill almost every enemy you meet, run around to get spotted constantly, and die more than 50 times. That single run knocks out a large share of the emblems at once. Then use the leftover clock by leaving Snake inside a barrel or box, standing against a wall, or prone, to accumulate the time-related emblems, and leave the console running overnight or while you are out.

Guide notes

Little Gray Cannot Fire on the Big Boss Run

An ordering trap worth its own section. Little Gray requires all 69 weapons, and unless you use passwords to unlock them, the last four weapons only become available after you have earned Big Boss. That means Little Gray structurally cannot unlock during the Big Boss run itself, because those weapons appear afterwards. Guides warn explicitly not to leave this step until the end, so plan a dedicated post-Big Boss weapons run.

Efficient route

Prepare Before the Big Boss Run

Do a run for the Centipede emblem with 0 kills and 0 alerts first, because it awards the Bandana and the Stealth Camo, both of which make everything afterwards far easier. Stock up on chaff grenades and obtain weapons like the Solar Gun in the same period. Then note the cap, ammo carries between playthroughs but is limited during the Big Boss run to 50 bullets per gun and 10 each of Smoke, Chaff and Stun grenades.

1

The Chaff Grenade Farm

Chaff cannot be bought from Drebin's Shop and greatly helps in Act 4, so farming it matters. During Act 1's boss fight against the Frog Troopers alongside Meryl's team, equip chaff grenades and stand next to Akiba, also called Johnny. At certain points while crouching he throws ammo for whichever weapon you currently have equipped. One player went from 5 chaff grenades to 25 in a single encounter.

2

The Beauty and Beast Bosses Have Two Phases

The first phase does not count as a kill. That means unless you are specifically going for the doll, which is what unlocks the Solar Gun and its associated trophies, you can beat them with lethal weapons regardless of what kind of run you are on. A useful nuance for a game where kill counts decide emblems.

3

Boss Extreme

The hardest difficulty and a platinum requirement.

4

Drebin Store Prices

Prices quoted in most guides are the standard ones and do not include the 20 percent discount, so a reader budgeting for weapon purchases should expect to pay less than the figures they see.

Guide notes

The 18 Missables

They include the four Beauty and Beast dolls, the Frog Soldier Doll, Infinite ammo, Stealth Camouflage and I am THE expert on weapons. Group them by which run they belong to, since with eight playthroughs the useful question is not whether a trophy is missable but which run to catch it on.

Guide notes

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Missable, Glitched, and Difficulty Notes

  • 18 missable trophies, including the four Beauty and Beast dolls, the Frog Soldier Doll, Infinite ammo, Stealth Camouflage and I am THE expert on weapons.
  • There are no Metal Gear Online trophies at all, so the June 2012 MGO shutdown did not affect the platinum.
  • The platinum requires all 40 emblems, because Sounds of the Battlefield needs every iPod track and Snake Eater is only awarded at 40 emblems.
  • Five emblems each require their own dedicated playthrough, so at least eight runs are realistic.
  • Little Gray needs all 69 weapons, and the final four only unlock after earning Big Boss, so it cannot fire during the Big Boss run itself.
  • Ammo carries between playthroughs but is capped during the Big Boss run, guns at 50 bullets and Smoke, Chaff and Stun grenades at 10 each.
  • Chaff grenades cannot be bought from Drebin's Shop. Farm them at Act 1's Frog Trooper fight by standing next to Akiba with chaff equipped.
  • Earning Big Boss unlocks at least 10 further emblems at once, so it belongs mid-plan rather than last.
  • The first phase of each Beauty and Beast fight does not count as a kill, so lethal weapons are safe there unless you want the doll.
  • Master Collection Vol. 2 reportedly brings a near-identical list to PS5, so Big Boss must be earned again there. Verify before publishing.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the Metal Gear Online shutdown affect MGS4 trophies?

No. There are no Metal Gear Online trophies on the list at all, so the 2012 shutdown did not affect the platinum. All 34 trophies are single player, tied to emblems and story progress.

Is Metal Gear Solid 4 coming to PS5 with trophies?

Yes, via Master Collection Vol. 2, and reporting says the trophy list is mostly the same as the PS3 version. That means the Big Boss emblem has to be earned all over again.

How many playthroughs does the MGS4 platinum need?

At least eight. The platinum requires all 40 emblems, five of which each need their own dedicated playthrough, and the total comes to roughly 80 hours.

What is the best first playthrough in MGS4?

Liquid Snake difficulty aiming for the Chicken emblem. It needs 35 hours of play time, so kill everything, get spotted constantly, die over 50 times, then idle in a barrel or prone to accumulate the time-based emblems.

Why won't the Little Gray emblem unlock?

Because it needs all 69 weapons and the final four only become available after you have earned Big Boss. It cannot fire during the Big Boss run itself, so plan a separate weapons run afterwards.

How do you farm chaff grenades in MGS4?

During Act 1's Frog Trooper boss fight, equip chaff grenades and stand next to Akiba. While crouching he throws ammo for your equipped weapon, and one player went from 5 to 25 in a single encounter.

What is the hardest part of the MGS4 platinum?

The Big Boss emblem, which is widely described as only achievable by very skilful players. Earning it does unlock at least 10 more emblems at once, so it is worth doing mid-plan rather than last.

Do you need to prepare before the Big Boss run?

Yes. Do a 0 kills, 0 alerts run for the Centipede emblem first, which awards the Bandana and Stealth Camo. Note that ammo is capped during Big Boss at 50 bullets per gun and 10 of each grenade type.
