Efficient route

Shadow of the Colossus Trophy Guide and Platinum Roadmap

Follow these phases in order to protect the missable work and keep the Shadow of the Colossus Platinum cleanup efficient.

1

Phase 1: Straight to Hard

Hard Mode is available from the start, so if you know the game go directly to it and skip a Normal playthrough entirely.

Use one save file and keep using it for every New Game Plus, so health and stamina carry over.

Take Speed Demon on this run if you are confident, finishing under 5 hours 41 minutes. You can save anywhere and pausing is fine.

Watch for Last Man Standing and Seeking Salvation, and take Dormin's Rage after the final colossus.

Pick up fruits and silver-tailed lizards as you pass them, but do not hunt them. They are no longer required.

2

Phase 2: Hard Time Attacks

Completing the game on Hard unlocks the Hard Time Attacks. Start each by kneeling at the statues in the main shrine area.

Work through all 16. This is the genuine difficulty of the platinum, not the speedrun.

Colossi 3 and 15 are more manageable here than on PS3, since Bluepoint fixed the grip issues and Colossus 3 gives more time.

This is the section buyers most often want handled. One soft mention of DamnModz fits here, then back to strategy.

When every Hard Time Attack is done, make a manual save.

3

Phase 3: Normal Time Attacks via New Game Plus

Start another New Game Plus on Normal, loading the save you just made after the Hard Time Attacks.

Complete all the Normal Time Attacks, which awards the second set of items.

With both sets in hand, Speed King unlocks. This sequence is the one thing nothing in the game explains.

4

Phase 4: The miscellaneous trophies and Intrepid Mortal

Pray at all the shrines, defeat a colossus with the Queen sword, interact with the Forbidden Land's wildlife and use Reminiscence Mode at a corpse mound.

Take the specific method trophies on colossi 3 and 8.

Intrepid Mortal, maxing health and stamina, arrives naturally across your playthroughs since each colossus defeated raises both bars. At 1.1 percent it is usually the final trophy.

Keep using the same file so those gains accumulate rather than resetting.

Guide notes

Start on Hard, Skip Normal

First section after the Quick Info box. On the PS3 version you had to clear Normal before Hard unlocked. On the PS4 remake Hard Mode is available from the very start. If you have played the game before, go straight to Hard and save yourself an entire playthrough. That single change is the biggest efficiency difference between the two versions.

Guide notes

The Speedrun Is the Easy Part

Speed Demon requires finishing on Hard in under 5 hours 41 minutes and 28 seconds. That reads terrifying and is not. Guides describe it as stupidly easy, since a player who knows the route can finish in under 3 hours. You can also save your game anywhere, and pausing does not stop you meeting the time. Confirm the exact limit before publishing it.

Guide notes

Speed King, and the Exact Sequence

The trophy the whole list builds toward, requiring all Time Attack items as one set from both difficulties. Complete the game on Hard, which unlocks the Hard Time Attacks. Start each by kneeling at the statues in the main shrine area. Complete all the Hard Time Attacks, then manually save. Now start another New Game Plus on Normal loading that save, and complete the Normal Time Attacks. That produces the full set from both difficulties. Nothing in the game explains this sequence.

Guide notes

You No Longer Need Every Lizard and Fruit

On the PS3 version the platinum required collecting all of them. On PS4 it does not. Intrepid Mortal, maxing health and stamina, comes naturally from multiple playthroughs since every colossus you defeat increases both bars a little, plus whatever fruits and silver-tailed lizards you happen to find.

Efficient route

Use the Same Save File Every Time

Health and stamina only carry over if you start each New Game Plus from the same file. Starting fresh resets your bars and makes Intrepid Mortal considerably longer.

1

What Bluepoint Fixed

The PS3 remaster introduced climbing and grip issues that made the game harder than intended. The PS4 remake fixed them, so colossi 3 and 15 are more manageable in Time Attack, and Colossus 3 actually gives you more time in this version. Worth saying to anyone who abandoned the PS3 platinum on those two fights.

2

Reminiscence Mode

Pray at the corpse mound of any colossus you have killed in your current playthrough, using the same input as the shrines, to replay that fight with a visual filter. Win and the trophy unlocks. Easy to miss entirely since nothing signposts it.

Efficient route

The Four Missables

Speed Demon, Last Man Standing, Seeking Salvation and Dormin's Rage. Note that Dormin's Rage comes after defeating the last colossus, and since you will finish the game several times, missing it once is not a serious problem.

1

New Trophies Not on PS3

Interacting with the Forbidden Land's wildlife, defeating a colossus with the Queen sword, praying at all shrines, and the Hard time limit. Colossi 3 and 8 also have specific method trophies. Flag these for PS3 veterans who assume the list is recycled.

2

Silver-Tailed Lizards

Two lizard types exist, all-black and black with silver tails. The silver-tailed ones slightly increase stamina when you take the tail. The easiest place to spot one is on a save shrine, since there is always one climbing around it.

Guide notes

Shadow of the Colossus Missable, Glitched, and Difficulty Notes

  • 4 missable trophies. Speed Demon, Last Man Standing, Seeking Salvation and Dormin's Rage. Since you finish the game several times, Dormin's Rage in particular is easy to pick up on a later run.
  • Difficulty does affect trophies. The speedrun must be on Hard, and all Time Attacks must be completed on both Normal and Hard.
  • Hard Mode is available from the start on PS4, unlike the PS3 version which gated it behind a Normal completion.
  • Speed King requires the full Time Attack item set from both difficulties. Do the Hard Time Attacks, save manually, then start New Game Plus on Normal from that save and do the Normal ones.
  • You must use the same save file for each New Game Plus, or health and stamina reset and Intrepid Mortal takes much longer.
  • Unlike the PS3 version, you do NOT need to collect all lizards and fruits for the platinum.
  • The speedrun limit is generous. Under 5 hours 41 minutes on Hard is achievable in under 3, you can save anywhere and pausing does not matter.
  • Bluepoint fixed the PS3 climbing and grip issues, so colossi 3 and 15 are more manageable and Colossus 3 gives more time.
  • The PS3 HD version has a separate 31 trophy list and includes trophies the PS4 remake does not, and vice versa.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to beat Normal before Hard in Shadow of the Colossus?

Not on the PS4 remake. Hard Mode is available from the very start, unlike the PS3 version, so experienced players can skip Normal entirely and save a whole playthrough.

How hard is the Shadow of the Colossus speedrun trophy?

Far easier than it sounds. You need under 5 hours 41 minutes on Hard, and a player who knows the route can finish in under 3. You can save anywhere and pausing does not affect it.

How do you get the Speed King trophy?

Complete all the Hard Time Attacks, make a manual save, then start a New Game Plus on Normal loading that save and complete the Normal Time Attacks. That gives you the full item set from both difficulties.

Do you need all the lizards and fruits in Shadow of the Colossus?

Not on PS4. The PS3 platinum required them all, but here Intrepid Mortal comes naturally from multiple playthroughs, since each colossus you defeat raises your health and stamina.

How many playthroughs does the Shadow of the Colossus platinum need?

Between 3 and 7. One Hard run, the Hard Time Attacks, a New Game Plus on Normal for the Normal Time Attacks, and however many more you need for maxing your stats.

Did the PS4 remake fix the difficult colossi?

Yes. Bluepoint fixed the climbing and grip issues the PS3 remaster introduced, so colossi 3 and 15 are more manageable in Time Attack and Colossus 3 actually gives you more time.

What is Reminiscence Mode in Shadow of the Colossus?

Pray at the corpse mound of any colossus you have killed in your current playthrough, using the same input as at the shrines, to replay that fight with a visual filter. Winning it awards a trophy.

Does the PS4 remake share trophies with the PS3 version?

No, they are separate lists. The PS3 HD version has 31 trophies and the PS4 remake has 38, with several new ones including wildlife interaction, the Queen sword and praying at all shrines.
