Kingdom Hearts 2 Trophy Guide and Platinum Roadmap
Follow these phases in order to protect the missable work and keep the Kingdom Hearts 2 Platinum cleanup efficient.
Phase 0: Choose Critical or Beginner
Difficulty trophies stack, so one Critical playthrough awards Proud Player and Ambitious Adventurer as well.
Critical is counter-intuitively easier than Proud, because the game grants MP Hastera and other strong abilities on day three of the prologue.
If you would rather enjoy the story and avoid frustration on the fiddly trophies, start on Beginner and do one Critical run at the end instead.
Note that neither secret ending is tied to a trophy, so you can ignore the Gold Crown and the three Proof items entirely.
Phase 1: The main story
Play through the story, completing Roxas's episode and reuniting with Riku and Kairi.
Fill Jiminy's Journal entries as you go, but there is no 100 percent journal trophy so nothing needs finishing in this run.
Get rescued by the King when Sora's HP depletes, choosing Don't give up on the continue screen then reviving Sora.
Work the miscellaneous trophies naturally, including activating Antiform 13 times.
Complete the Gummi Ship missions, which are much easier than in the first game and do not all need doing.
Phase 2: The coliseum cups and Gummi EX
Win the four standard cups, Pain and Panic, Cerberus, Titan and Goddess of Fate.
Then the four Paradox Cups. The Hades Paradox Cup is the longest fight in the game, so leave it until you are well equipped.
Get an S rank on a Gummi Ship EX mission for all routes.
Satisfy every member of Mushroom XIII, which is fiddly rather than hard.
Phase 3: The optional bosses
Defeat all Organization XIII Replica Data, then Sephiroth.
Defeat the Lingering Will, which is the hardest fight in the game at around 8 out of 10 and also the only optional Character Link entry in Jiminy's Journal, so it gates the Seeker trophy too.
This is the skill wall of the platinum. One soft mention of DamnModz fits here, then back to strategy.
Phase 4: Critical clear and the platinum
If you started on Beginner, do your Critical run now. It awards all three difficulty trophies at once.
If you started on Critical, those three are already banked and you only need the remaining cleanup.
Synthesise items and finish the remaining collection trophies.
If you want another platinum, the other console version has a separate list, and the collection holds four platinums in total.
Guide notes
Difficulty Trophies Stack Here
First section after the Quick Info box, and the key difference from our Kingdom Hearts Final Mix page. In Kingdom Hearts II, clearing Critical awards Proud Player and Ambitious Adventurer at the same time, confirmed by players receiving Proud immediately after Critical. In the first game on PS3 they did not stack and three playthroughs were needed.
Guide notes
Critical Mode Is Easier Than Proud
Genuinely counter-intuitive. Critical doubles enemy damage, halves HP and MP boosts from bonus levels and cuts EXP, but the game then hands you powerful abilities on the third day of the prologue including MP Hastera, several of which are not learned until much later on lower difficulties. Multiple players report Critical plays easier than Proud as a result. Explain why rather than just asserting it.
Guide notes
Neither Secret Ending Needs a Trophy
The Gathering and Birth by Sleep endings are tied to no trophy. That matters because unlocking the second on lower difficulties would require the Gold Crown, earned from three Proof items from the game's toughest sidequests. Their exclusion removes a substantial block of work from the platinum.
Guide notes
No 100 Percent Journal Trophy
Unlike the first game there is no trophy for completing Jiminy's Journal entirely, which means journal entries can be spread across multiple playthroughs rather than completed in one. Another meaningful reduction in scope from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
Guide notes
Two Valid Approaches
, an H3 each. Start on Critical for a single playthrough that banks all three difficulty trophies, or start on Beginner because several trophies are frustrating on harder difficulties and then do one Critical run at the end. Give both with the trade-off rather than prescribing.
Guide notes
The Optional Bosses Are the Difficulty
, an H3 each. The Lingering Will at 8 out of 10 is the hardest, followed by Sephiroth, all Organization XIII Replica Data and Mushroom XIII. Note that the Lingering Will is also the only optional Character Link entry in Jiminy's Journal, so it gates the Seeker trophy too.
Efficient route
The Four Paradox Cups
Pain and Panic, Cerberus, Titan and Hades Paradox Cups, plus the four standard cups. The Hades Paradox Cup is the longest single fight in the game and deserves its own strategy.
Gummi Ship Is Much Easier Here
Missions return from the first game but are considerably easier and not all must be completed. You do need an S rank on a Gummi Ship EX mission for all routes. A welcome contrast with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix where the Gummi Ship trophies were a real chore.
The King Is Not Missable
Getting rescued by Mickey is only possible in ten specific boss fights, but the tenth can be repeated indefinitely so it cannot be lost. When Sora's HP depletes, choose Don't give up on the continue screen, then revive Sora with the command given.
Part of the Same Collection as Kingdom Hearts
Our Kingdom Hearts page covers KH Final Mix in the same HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX collection, which holds four separate platinums. Cross-link both ways and note the difficulty stacking difference explicitly.

Quick answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do difficulty trophies stack in Kingdom Hearts 2?
Yes. Clearing Critical awards Proud Player and Ambitious Adventurer at the same time. This differs from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix on PS3, where they did not stack and three playthroughs were needed.
Is Critical mode harder than Proud in Kingdom Hearts 2?
Counter-intuitively, no. Critical doubles enemy damage but the game grants you powerful abilities on day three of the prologue including MP Hastera, and many players report it plays easier than Proud.
Do you need the secret endings for the Kingdom Hearts 2 platinum?
No. Neither the Gathering nor the Birth by Sleep ending is tied to a trophy, which means the Gold Crown and its three Proof items are not required at all.
Do you need to complete Jiminy's Journal in Kingdom Hearts 2?
Not fully. Unlike the first game there is no 100 percent journal trophy, so entries can be spread across multiple playthroughs.
What is the hardest trophy in Kingdom Hearts 2?
Defeating the Lingering Will, rated around 8 out of 10. It also happens to be the only optional Character Link entry in Jiminy's Journal, so it gates the Seeker trophy as well.
How many playthroughs does Kingdom Hearts 2 need?
One if you start on Critical, since the difficulty trophies stack. Two if you prefer starting on Beginner to avoid frustration on the fiddly trophies, then doing a Critical run at the end.
Are the Gummi Ship trophies bad in Kingdom Hearts 2?
Much better than in the first game. The missions are considerably easier and not all must be completed, though you do need an S rank on an EX mission for all routes.
How many platinums are in the Kingdom Hearts collection?
Four in HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, covering Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Birth by Sleep Final Mix.
