Final Fantasy VII Trophy Guide and Platinum Roadmap
Follow these phases in order to protect the missable work and keep the Final Fantasy VII Platinum cleanup efficient.
Phase 0: Confirm which game you are playing
This is the 1997 original ported to PS4, not Final Fantasy VII Remake or Rebirth. Those are separate trophy lists entirely.
Decide on cheats. God Mode, 3x speed and no encounters are all trophy safe, so use whatever suits you.
If this is your first time playing, consider leaving God Mode off and using only 3x speed so the game still has stakes.
Do not assume this rule applies to Final Fantasy IX. Its config menu cheats disable trophies and can lock earned ones.
Phase 1: The story, and pick up W-Item
Play through the story, using 3x speed to cut the running time considerably.
During your second visit to Midgar, instead of fighting the Turks straight away, turn back and travel to the dead end with a save point to collect the W-Item materia.
If you missed it, dig for it in Bone Village later.
Bank the story-related trophies as you progress, and note which minigames carry trophies as you encounter them.
Phase 2: The W-Item glitch and the stat grinds
Use the W-Item duplication glitch to take any item you hold two of up to 99 in about a minute.
Apply it to Source items, which removes the traditional stat maxing grind almost entirely.
That in turn makes the endgame content and any superboss requirements far more approachable than they were originally.
Phase 3: Minigames and superbosses
Work through whichever minigames carry trophies, including the Gold Saucer games and Chocobo content if required.
Confirm whether Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon are needed for the platinum before committing time to them.
With duplicated Sources and God Mode available if you want it, neither superboss should present a real obstacle.
One soft mention of DamnModz fits here at most, given how much the cheats reduce the difficulty.
Guide notes
This Page Covers the 1997 Original
The keyword serves at least three different games with entirely separate trophy lists, the 1997 original as ported to PS4 in 2015, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Our Remake and Rebirth pages are already live.
Guide notes
The Cheats Do Not Disable Trophies
The PS4 port includes toggleable cheats, God Mode for invincibility, 3x speed and no encounters. Enabling any or all of them does not prevent trophies from unlocking, which turns a 1997 JRPG into a comfortable platinum. Note the caveat that guides themselves make, if you are playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time, leaving God Mode off will give you a much better experience.
Guide notes
The W-Item Duplication Glitch
Still present in this version and it removes most of the grind. Take any item you hold two of and you can duplicate it up to 99 in about a minute, which includes Source items and therefore the entire stat maxing process. Where to get it, during your second visit to Midgar, instead of fighting the Turks straight away turn back and take a long journey to a dead end containing a save point, with the W-Item materia beside it. If you already passed that point you can dig for it in Bone Village.
Guide notes
Do Not Assume the FF9 Rule Is the Same
This is the most important cross-page warning in the cluster. Final Fantasy VII's cheats are entirely trophy safe, and so are Final Fantasy VIII's boosters. But Final Fantasy IX has two different systems, and its config menu cheats disable trophies and can lock ones you have already earned on that save file. Link our FF9 page with that warning attached.
Guide notes
The Superbosses
Confirm whether Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon are required for the platinum, since they are the traditional endgame challenges and their presence or absence changes the difficulty rating substantially. If required, note that the W-Item Source duplication makes them far more approachable than they were in 1997.
Efficient route
The Minigames
Chocobo breeding and racing, the Gold Saucer games, snowboarding and the submarine sequence all traditionally feed completion requirements.
3x Speed Is the Real Time Saver
Even for readers who want a legitimate run, the 3x speed toggle cuts the traditional 40 hour plus story considerably without touching combat difficulty. Recommend it separately from God Mode, since many readers want the challenge but not the pacing.

Final Fantasy VII Missable, Glitched, and Difficulty Notes
- Verify the missable position against the live list, since reliable data on this port is thinner than for modern releases.
- The PS4 cheats, God Mode, 3x speed and no encounters, do NOT prevent trophies from unlocking.
- Guides advise against God Mode on a genuine first playthrough so the game can be experienced properly.
- The W-Item duplication glitch remains in this version and lets you duplicate any item held in quantity two up to 99, including Source items.
- W-Item is found during your second visit to Midgar, reached by turning back from the Turks and travelling to a dead end with a save point. It can also be dug up in Bone Village.
- Do not assume the cheat rules carry across the series. Final Fantasy IX's config menu cheats disable trophies and can lock ones already earned.
- This page covers the 1997 original ported to PS4, not Final Fantasy VII Remake or Rebirth, which have entirely separate lists.
- Confirm whether Ruby and Emerald Weapon are required for the platinum before planning the endgame.
Quick answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the cheats disable trophies in Final Fantasy VII on PS4?
No. God Mode, 3x speed and no encounters can all be toggled without preventing any trophy from unlocking, which makes this a comfortable platinum.
Is this the same as Final Fantasy VII Remake?
No. This covers the 1997 original as ported to PS4 in 2015. Remake and Rebirth are separate games with entirely separate trophy lists and much higher difficulty.
Where do you get the W-Item materia?
During your second visit to Midgar. Instead of fighting the Turks straight away, turn back and travel to a dead end with a save point, where the materia sits beside it. You can also dig it up in Bone Village.
What does the W-Item glitch do?
It lets you take any item you hold two of and duplicate it up to 99 in about a minute. That includes Source items, which removes the traditional stat maxing grind almost entirely.
Should you use God Mode in Final Fantasy VII?
It is trophy safe, so it is entirely your choice. Guides suggest leaving it off if this is your first playthrough, and using only 3x speed so the game keeps its stakes.
Do Final Fantasy IX cheats work the same way?
No, and this matters. Final Fantasy IX's pause screen boosters are safe but its config menu cheats disable trophies and can lock ones you have already earned on that save file.
Do you need to beat Ruby and Emerald Weapon?
Check the live trophy list, since sources are thin on this port. If they are required, the W-Item Source duplication makes both far more approachable than they were originally.
How long does it take to platinum Final Fantasy VII?
Considerably less than the traditional playthrough length, since 3x speed and no encounters are both trophy safe. Verify the current estimate against the live list.
