Final Fantasy IX Trophy Guide and Platinum Roadmap
Follow these phases in order to protect the missable work and keep the Final Fantasy IX Platinum cleanup efficient.
Phase 0: The one rule that matters
Never use the config menu cheats. They lock trophies you have already earned on that save file and halt the platinum entirely.
Pause screen boosters are completely safe. Use those freely for speed and convenience.
If the game shows you a warning when activating something, read it. That warning is the config menu cheat warning.
Do not assume this matches Final Fantasy VII or VIII, where all cheats and boosters are trophy safe.
Phase 1: The story with side content
Play through the story using pause screen boosters for speed as you like.
Work Chocobo Hot and Cold from when it becomes available, since the Chocographs and dive spots gate several ultimate weapons.
Build Tetra Master wins toward 100 as you go, re-challenging NPCs where possible after story progress.
Accumulate kills toward the 10,000 total and work toward level 99, both of which pair well with the speed booster.
Phase 2: The Excalibur chain and Disc 4 items
Save Gil for the Treno Auction House, where competition is fierce and prices are high.
Acquire Une's Mirror, Griffin's Heart, Rat Tail and Doga's Artifact.
The Magical Fingertip can only be obtained during Disc 4, so do not leave the chain incomplete before reaching it.
You also need the ability to fly in Gaia to complete this, so plan around the airship.
Phase 3: The minigame grinds
King of Jump Rope needs 1000 skips without tripping. A Turbo Controller and PS4 Remote Play on a PC both help here.
Finish the 100 Tetra Master wins if they are still outstanding.
Complete the remaining ultimate weapons via their Chocobo and auction sources.
This is where the 87 hours actually goes. One soft mention of DamnModz fits here.
Phase 4: The Excalibur II speedrun
Save this until last, so you know exactly where to go.
Activate as many pause screen boosters as you want, raise text and battle speed, and blitz to Lich in the final dungeon.
You have 12 hours and a knowledgeable player should not need even half of that.
Beat Lich, collect Excalibur II from that room, and the platinum should follow.
Guide notes
This Rule Does Not Apply to FF7 or FF8
Final Fantasy IX is the exception in the series, and it is the one where a wrong menu choice is unrecoverable.
Guide notes
Excalibur II Is No Longer a Nightmare
Historically the most feared requirement in the game, needing you to reach and defeat Lich in the final dungeon within 12 real hours. With the pause screen speed booster active, guides describe it as a joke, saying a player who knows the route should not need even half the allowed time, and one source puts the whole side quest at around 5 hours. Save it until last so you know where to go, then blitz through with text and battle speed raised.
Guide notes
The Regular Excalibur Chain
Separate from Excalibur II and easy to get stranded on. You need Une's Mirror, Griffin's Heart, Rat Tail, Doga's Artifact and a Magical Fingertip, all obtained through the Treno Auction House where competition is fierce and prices are high, so bring excess Gil. Crucially the Magical Fingertip can only be obtained during Disc 4, and you also need the ability to fly in Gaia. Publish the Disc 4 gate prominently since it strands people late.
Efficient route
The Minigame Grinds
, an H3 each. King of Jump Rope requires 1000 skips without tripping. Tetra Master requires 100 wins, and certain NPCs can be re-challenged to build the count after story progress. Chocobo Hot and Cold covers the Chocographs and dive spots, which also gate several ultimate weapons. Give each its own method rather than grouping them, since they are the bulk of the 87 hours.
Hardware Assistance Is Worth Considering
A Turbo Controller, and a PC with PS4 Remote Play enabled, both help with certain trophies.
Efficient route
The Ultimate Weapons
Several are tied to side content rather than progression. The Whale Whisker rod comes from Chocograph 18 Ocean, the Tiger Racket from Chocobo Dive Spot 4, and others from the Chocobo and auction chains.
The Cumulative Grinds
Bloodlust requires defeating 10,000 enemies, plus level 99 and 10,000 of the relevant currency. These are pure time and they pair well with the pause screen speed booster, which is exactly the sort of legitimate use it exists for.
The Autosave Feature
This version adds autosave, which the PS1 original lacked. Note it, since it changes save discipline compared with older guides written for the original release.
The Trophy Count Is Higher Than Expected
52 trophies, and the list asks for practically everything in the game, from every major side quest to all ultimate weapons to the minigame mastery. Set that expectation early so the 87 hour figure makes sense.

- The full Excalibur chain needs Une's Mirror, Griffin's Heart, Rat Tail, Doga's Artifact and the Magical Fingertip, all via the Treno Auction House with fierce competition and high prices.
- You need the ability to fly in Gaia to complete the Excalibur chain.
- King of Jump Rope requires 1000 skips without tripping, and a Turbo Controller or PS4 Remote Play on a PC both assist with it.

Quick answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do boosters disable trophies in Final Fantasy IX?
It depends which ones. Pause screen boosters are completely safe. Config menu cheats disable trophies and will lock ones you have already earned on that save file, halting the platinum entirely.
What happens if you use the config menu cheats in FF9?
That trophy and every other trophy you have already unlocked become locked on that save file. It is not just future trophies failing, it retroactively invalidates earned ones, so the platinum is halted.
Is it true FF7 and FF8 cheats are safe but FF9's are not?
Yes, and it catches people out. Final Fantasy VII's cheats and Final Fantasy VIII's boosters are entirely trophy safe. Final Fantasy IX is the exception, and only via its config menu.
How hard is the Excalibur II trophy now?
Far easier than its reputation. You need to reach and beat Lich within 12 hours, and with the safe pause screen speed booster a player who knows the route should not need even half that.
When can you get the Magical Fingertip in FF9?
Only during Disc 4. It is the final item in the regular Excalibur chain, so make sure you have not stranded the rest of the chain before reaching that point.
How do you get King of Jump Rope in FF9?
1000 skips without tripping. A Turbo Controller, and a PC with PS4 Remote Play enabled, both help considerably with this specific trophy.
How long does it take to platinum Final Fantasy IX?
Around 87 hours. The list asks for practically everything in the game, including every major side quest, all ultimate weapons and the minigame mastery.
Does the PS4 version of FF9 have autosave?
Yes, unlike the PS1 original. That changes save discipline compared with older guides written for the original release.
