How to Get HSW Upgrade in GTA 5

How to Get HSW Upgrade in GTA 5
Note: This guide fixes that by showing the current GTA Online HSW upgrade path with verified platforms, real HSW menu names, and no fake settings. It does not cover Story Mode mods, money glitches, graphics settings, or old-gen platforms that do not have Hao’s Special Works.

The HSW upgrade in GTA 5 is easy to misunderstand because many older guides still treat Hao’s intro race as the main unlock step. That is outdated for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it can make players chase the wrong fix.

This mainly affects GTA Online players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GTAV Enhanced on PC who want to convert an eligible personal vehicle at Hao’s Special Works.

This guide shows the exact path: check your platform, go to the LS Car Meet, bring a compatible vehicle, buy the HSW Performance Upgrade, then install the HSW parts that actually appear for that vehicle.

It does not rank every HSW car by speed. For that, use the fastest cars in GTA 5 Online guide after you confirm HSW is unlocked.

HSW Upgrade Summary

Main step:

To get the HSW upgrade in GTA 5, you need GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC. Then you need the LS Car Meet, an eligible personal vehicle, and the HSW Performance Upgrade option inside Hao’s shop.

  1. Launch GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  2. Go to the LS Car Meet in Cypress Flats.
  3. Buy the LS Car Meet Membership if you do not already have it.
  4. Bring an HSW-compatible personal vehicle inside.
  5. Open the vehicle modification prompt while sitting in the vehicle.
  6. Select HSW Performance Upgrade.
  7. Install the HSW-specific parts that appear for that vehicle.
Expected result: The vehicle becomes eligible for HSW-specific performance and visual options after conversion.
If you need to back out: Do not buy the conversion until the vehicle, platform, and price are correct. GTA Online does not treat this like a temporary setting toggle.
Result: If the HSW Performance Upgrade appears and you can buy it, move to the next step and convert the vehicle you actually want.

HSW Upgrade Checks

Use these checks before spending money or time. HSW access problems usually come from platform, vehicle, membership, or race-lobby rules.

  • If you are on PS4, Xbox One, or GTA V Legacy PC: you cannot buy real HSW upgrades on that version. Use PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  • If the LS Car Meet works but HSW does not appear: bring a vehicle from the eligible list in this guide.
  • If the car is converted but feels normal in a race: check whether the host disabled HSW Mods in the race lobby.
  • If Hao’s intro prompt appears on your account: complete it if you want to clear the prompt, but do not treat it as the required PS5 or Xbox Series X|S unlock step.
Current Platform

The vehicle must be compatible with the HSW Performance Upgrade.

Current Location

Required Check

The normal route is Hao’s Special Works inside the LS Car Meet.

Current Race

Race Check

Race hosts can disable HSW Mods before launching the race.

HSW Upgrade Platforms

Check:

Start with platform because nothing else matters if your version cannot use Hao’s Special Works. The current platform rule is: HSW upgrades are available in GTA Online on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GTAV Enhanced on PC.

  1. Open the game version you normally use for GTA Online.
  2. Confirm whether you are on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  3. If you are on PC, confirm you launched the Enhanced version, not the Legacy version.
  4. If you are on PS4 or Xbox One, stop looking for HSW conversion menus.
Expected result: Eligible platforms can reach HSW content. Old-gen and Legacy PC cannot use the real HSW conversion path.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Launch your original version again if you opened the wrong GTA Online build.
Result: If you were on the wrong version, switch to an eligible version before doing anything else.

Pick the three facts that matter.

Ready For HSW

Go to Hao’s shop inside the LS Car Meet and look for HSW Performance Upgrade.

HSW Upgrade Location

Main step:

Hao’s Special Works is inside the LS Car Meet in Cypress Flats, Los Santos. This is the normal place to access the HSW upgrade path.

  1. Open GTA Online on an eligible platform.
  2. Open the map.
  3. Set a waypoint to the LS Car Meet in Cypress Flats.
  4. Drive to the LS Car Meet entrance.
  5. Enter the LS Car Meet with your personal vehicle if possible.
Expected result: You are inside the LS Car Meet, where the vehicle modification area can access Hao’s Special Works on eligible platforms.
If you need to back out: Exit the LS Car Meet through the vehicle exit prompt or leave the building on foot.
Result: If you reached Hao’s shop with an eligible vehicle, skip to HSW Upgrade Purchase.

HSW Upgrade Membership

Main step:

The LS Car Meet Membership normally costs GTA$50,000. Buy it from Mimi if your character has not joined the LS Car Meet yet.

  1. Enter the LS Car Meet.
  2. Find Mimi inside the meet space.
  3. Buy the LS Car Meet Membership for GTA$50,000.
  4. Return to your personal vehicle.
  5. Open the vehicle modification prompt again.
Expected result: LS Car Meet features open up, and the modification path is easier to access.
If you need to back out: Membership is a purchase, not a graphics or gameplay toggle. There is no simple on-off switch to refund it from this menu.
Result: If the HSW Performance Upgrade now appears for your eligible vehicle, do not continue troubleshooting.

HSW Upgrade Vehicle

Check:

Not every car or bike can use HSW. If your vehicle is not on the HSW roster, the HSW Performance Upgrade will not appear for it.

  1. Check your vehicle name against the HSW Upgrade Costs table below.
  2. Use the exact vehicle variant, not a similar base model.
  3. Bring that personal vehicle into the LS Car Meet.
  4. Open the vehicle modification prompt while sitting inside it.
  5. Look for HSW Performance Upgrade.
Expected result: Eligible vehicles show the HSW conversion entry. Non-eligible vehicles do not.
If you need to back out: Leave the menu and switch to a different personal vehicle.
Result: If switching vehicles reveals HSW Performance Upgrade, your old vehicle was the problem.

HSW Upgrade Purchase

Main step:

The actual conversion is called HSW Performance Upgrade. That exact label matters. Avoid vague wording like “native HSW,” “1080p HSW,” or “turn on HSW mode” because those are not the upgrade path.

  1. Sit inside an HSW-compatible personal vehicle in the LS Car Meet.
  2. Open the vehicle modification prompt.
  3. Select HSW Performance Upgrade.
  4. Check the price before confirming.
  5. Buy the conversion only if the vehicle and price are correct.
Expected result: The vehicle is converted into its HSW-compatible version, and more HSW-specific options become available.
If you need to back out: Do not confirm the purchase if you are unsure. Treat the conversion as a paid vehicle upgrade, not a temporary setting.
Result: If the vehicle converted successfully, your HSW unlock problem is solved.

HSW Upgrade Parts

Main step:

After conversion, buy only the HSW items that actually appear for your vehicle. The verified HSW labels include HSW Brakes, HSW Engine Tunes, HSW Suspension, HSW Transmission, HSW Turbo Tuning, and EV-only HSW Modes.

Do not assume every vehicle gets every HSW part. Motorcycles, gas vehicles, and electric vehicles do not share the exact same HSW menu layout.

  1. Stay in the vehicle modification menu after conversion.
  2. Open the performance categories shown for that vehicle.
  3. Install HSW Brakes if available.
  4. Install HSW Engine Tunes if available.
  5. Install HSW Suspension if available.
  6. Install HSW Transmission if available.
  7. Install HSW Turbo Tuning if available.
  8. For EVs, check HSW Modes instead of forcing gas-car performance parts.
Expected result: The converted vehicle gains the HSW-specific performance options the game actually offers for that model.
If you need to back out: Re-enter the modification menu and choose a lower or non-HSW tier where the game offers that choice.
Vehicle note: Not every HSW vehicle has HSW Turbo, HSW Transmission, and HSW Suspension. The available parts depend on the vehicle type.

HSW Upgrade Costs

Check:

The table below is the checked HSW conversion roster. Use it to confirm whether a vehicle is eligible and to avoid telling readers that an unrelated car has an HSW upgrade.

Expected result: Search and filters narrow the checked HSW roster without inventing unsupported vehicles.
If you need to back out: Clear the search field and select All.

HSW Upgrade Voucher

Cost check:

Some accounts can see discounts, vouchers, event perks, or account-specific offers around HSW content. A free HSW upgrade is not universal unless the game shows that specific offer on the account.

  1. Bring the eligible vehicle to Hao’s shop.
  2. Open HSW Performance Upgrade.
  3. Read the price shown on your account.
  4. Check whether the game applies a voucher or free price before confirming.
  5. Buy only after the final price is clear.
Expected result: Your account shows the real price before purchase, including any valid discount or voucher behavior.
If you need to back out: Back out of the purchase screen before confirming if the expected voucher does not apply.
Voucher note: Treat free HSW conversions as account-specific unless the game shows the offer on that account.

HSW Upgrade Mansion

Advanced route:

The normal method is still the LS Car Meet. As of Rockstar’s 2026 update notes, GTA+ Members who own a mansion with the Vehicle Workshop upgrade can also access exclusive mod options there, including Hao’s Special Works.

  1. Confirm your GTA+ membership is active.
  2. Confirm you own a mansion with the Vehicle Workshop upgrade.
  3. Drive an HSW-compatible personal vehicle into that workshop.
  4. Open the vehicle modification menu.
  5. Look for Hao’s Special Works options.
Expected result: Eligible GTA+ mansion workshop setups can access HSW-style exclusive modification options without using the LS Car Meet as the only route.
If you need to back out: Use the LS Car Meet route instead if you do not have GTA+ or the mansion workshop setup.
Result: If your mansion workshop shows HSW options, you do not need to force the LS Car Meet route for that vehicle.

HSW Mods Setting

HSW Mods is a race-lobby option, not a graphics setting. If your HSW car feels normal only in a race, the host may have disabled HSW mods before the race launched.

  1. Join or host a race that allows HSW-capable vehicles.
  2. Check the race lobby options before launch.
  3. Look for the HSW mods option.
  4. If you are the host, keep HSW mods enabled when you want HSW performance.
  5. If you are not the host, join another lobby if HSW mods are disabled.
Expected result: The same car can behave differently in races depending on whether HSW mods are allowed.
If you need to back out: Re-enable HSW mods before launching the race, or join a race hosted with HSW mods enabled.
Race note: HSW Mods is a race-lobby rule, not a display, resolution, FPS, or PC graphics option.

HSW Upgrade Troubleshooting

Use advanced troubleshooting only after the basic platform, membership, vehicle, and location checks. Most HSW problems do not need advanced fixes.

HSW Upgrade Missing

Check:

  1. Confirm you are on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  2. Confirm you are in GTA Online, not Story Mode.
  3. Confirm you have LS Car Meet Membership.
  4. Confirm your vehicle appears in the HSW Upgrade Costs table.
  5. Switch sessions and re-enter the LS Car Meet.
  6. Open the modification prompt again while sitting in the vehicle.
Expected result: The missing HSW menu is usually explained by platform, mode, membership, or vehicle eligibility.
If you need to back out: No permanent setting changed. Return to your previous session or vehicle.
Result: If the menu appears after switching to an eligible vehicle or platform, move on.

HSW Intro Race

Rockstar changed the old PS5 and Xbox Series X|S requirement in Title Update 1.64: players no longer need to complete Hao’s Intro Race to access the HSW Upgrade Service and mods on those platforms.

  1. Avoid using Hao’s Intro Race as the first unlock step on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  2. Go to the LS Car Meet instead.
  3. Use an eligible personal vehicle.
  4. Look for HSW Performance Upgrade.
  5. Complete any Hao intro prompt only if it appears on your account and you want to clear it.
Expected result: Current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S HSW access does not need to be blocked behind that old race requirement.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Ignore the old guide step and check the real HSW menu.
Fact Check: It is fine to mention Hao’s Intro Race as historical context. Do not list it as the required unlock step for current PS5 or Xbox Series X|S access.

HSW Race Speed

  1. Test the vehicle in free roam after conversion.
  2. Test the same vehicle in a race you host.
  3. Check the race lobby for HSW mods behavior.
  4. Compare it with a race where HSW mods are allowed.
  5. Do not replace parts until you confirm the race setting is not the issue.
Expected result: If the car only feels slower in races, the issue can be race rules rather than a missing HSW conversion.
If you need to back out: Use a race lobby with HSW mods enabled.

HSW Upgrade Mistakes

Avoid these common HSW mistakes because they confuse the upgrade path or describe settings that do not belong to HSW.

  • Avoid claiming HSW is in Story Mode: this guide is for GTA Online.
  • Avoid claiming all PC players have HSW: say GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  • PS4 and Xbox One cannot buy real HSW conversions: use PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC.
  • Avoid claiming Hao’s Intro Race is required on current PS5 or Xbox Series X|S builds: that is outdated.
  • Avoid claiming every HSW vehicle has every HSW part: vehicle types have exceptions.
  • Avoid claiming HSW Mods is a graphics setting: it is a race-lobby option.
  • Avoid fake display language: HSW has nothing to do with native 1080p, FPS modes, or resolution settings.

HSW Upgrade Recap

The short answer is simple: use GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or GTAV Enhanced on PC, go to Hao’s Special Works inside the LS Car Meet, bring an eligible personal vehicle, and buy HSW Performance Upgrade.

After that, install the HSW parts that appear for that specific vehicle. If the car works in free roam but feels slower in a race, check the race lobby’s HSW mods rule before assuming your upgrade is broken.
