Note: This guide uses the current Story Mode Interaction Menu route for Director Mode and by only listing menu labels that are still used in the live UI. It does not cover phone shortcuts, cheats, or Rockstar Editor workflows that are not needed for the safest method.
Bad Director Mode guides usually mix old menu paths, GTA Online steps, and optional shortcuts. This guide keeps the answer narrow: the current Story Mode route that gets you from normal play into Director Mode with the fewest moving parts.
This matters for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S players who want the shortest verified path. It also matters for standalone GTA Online owners, because Director Mode depends on Story Mode access.
We will cover the exact entry path, the Casting Trailer handoff, and the common blockers that stop Director Mode from opening. We will not cover filming tips, phone-number shortcuts, or advanced Rockstar Editor workflows.
Expected result: The game loads into Director Mode with your selected actor, and the Director Mode menu becomes available once you are in the map.
If you need to back out: Open the Interaction Menu and select Quit Director Mode. If you only want to change setup, select Return to Casting Trailer instead.
GTA 5 Casting Trailer
Some players think Director Mode failed because the map does not load right away. In many cases, the Casting Trailer is the final setup screen, not an error.
