How to Enter Director Mode in GTA 5

How to Enter Director Mode in GTA 5
Note: This guide uses the current Story Mode Interaction Menu route for Director Mode and by only listing menu labels that are still used in the live UI. It does not cover phone shortcuts, cheats, or Rockstar Editor workflows that are not needed for the safest method.

Bad Director Mode guides usually mix old menu paths, GTA Online steps, and optional shortcuts. This guide keeps the answer narrow: the current Story Mode route that gets you from normal play into Director Mode with the fewest moving parts.

This matters for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S players who want the shortest verified path. It also matters for standalone GTA Online owners, because Director Mode depends on Story Mode access.

We will cover the exact entry path, the Casting Trailer handoff, and the common blockers that stop Director Mode from opening. We will not cover filming tips, phone-number shortcuts, or advanced Rockstar Editor workflows.

GTA 5 Director Mode routes

Use the shortest branch that matches what you see.

  • If you are in GTA Online or only own standalone GTA Online: go to GTA 5 Story Mode Fix.
  • If Director Mode is listed but will not open: go to the blocker section that matches your state.
  • If the Casting Trailer opens and you stop there: go to GTA 5 Casting Trailer.

GTA 5 Director Mode Steps

This is the main route. It answers the core question without optional shortcuts.

What to do:

  1. Load GTA 5 Story Mode.
  2. Wait until you can move your character in normal play.
  3. Make sure your character is on foot.
  4. Open the Interaction Menu. Use M on PC, hold Touchpad on PlayStation, or hold View on Xbox.
  5. Select Director Mode.
  6. In the Casting Trailer, select Actors.
  7. Choose the actor you want to use.
  8. Select Enter Director Mode.
Expected result: The game loads into Director Mode with your selected actor, and the Director Mode menu becomes available once you are in the map.
If you need to back out: Open the Interaction Menu and select Quit Director Mode. If you only want to change setup, select Return to Casting Trailer instead.

GTA 5 Casting Trailer

Some players think Director Mode failed because the map does not load right away. In many cases, the Casting Trailer is the final setup screen, not an error.

What to check:

  1. Select Actors.
  2. Pick a category and actor.
  3. Back out to the main Casting Trailer menu.
  4. Select Enter Director Mode.
Expected result: The game leaves the trailer screen and loads the selected actor into Director Mode.
If you need to back out: Select Exit to Story Mode from the Casting Trailer if you do not want to launch Director Mode.

GTA 5 Story Mode Fix

Director Mode depends on Story Mode access. If you only own standalone GTA Online, you will not get Director Mode until Story Mode is installed.

What to do:

  1. Leave GTA Online and load Story Mode.
  2. If you only own standalone GTA Online, buy or install Story Mode first.
  3. Wait until Story Mode loads and you can control your character.
  4. Open the Interaction Menu and look for Director Mode.
Expected result: Director Mode can appear in the Story Mode Interaction Menu once Story Mode access is in place.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Return to GTA Online when you are done.

GTA 5 Wanted Level Fix

A wanted state blocks Director Mode. Clear the wanted state first, because Director Mode will not open while police are still searching for you.

What to do:

  1. Lose your wanted level.
  2. Wait until every wanted star is gone.
  3. Stand still for a moment if the police search is still resolving.
  4. Open the Interaction Menu and select Director Mode again.
Expected result: Director Mode can open once the wanted state is fully cleared.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Resume Story Mode normally.

GTA 5 Vehicle Fix

Director Mode will not open while your character is in a vehicle.

What to do:

  1. Exit the vehicle completely.
  2. Move a few steps away from the door.
  3. Open the Interaction Menu.
  4. Select Director Mode.
Expected result: Director Mode can open once your character is standing on foot.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Re-enter the vehicle if you want to continue normal play.

GTA 5 Mission Fix

Active mission state can block Director Mode even if the menu is otherwise working.

What to do:

  1. Finish the mission, fail it, or quit back to normal Story Mode play.
  2. Wait until mission text and mission rules are gone.
  3. Open the Interaction Menu.
  4. Select Director Mode.
Expected result: Director Mode can open once Story Mode returns to normal play.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Restart the mission from normal game menus if needed.

GTA 5 Swimming Fix

Swimming state can block Director Mode even if every other requirement looks right.

What to do:

  1. Swim back to land or climb onto a solid surface.
  2. Wait until your character returns to normal walking controls.
  3. Open the Interaction Menu.
  4. Select Director Mode.
Expected result: Director Mode can open once the character is back on land.
If you need to back out: No setting changed. Resume exploration normally.
